Bloodletting with leeches was such a popular treatment for a range of medical conditions that an artificial leech was invented in 1840 and was used frequently in eye and ear surgery. The rotating blades would cut a wound in the patient’s skin, while the cylinder would be used to produce a vacuum that sucked up the blood.

Tobacco Smoke Enema (1750s-1810s)

The tobacco enema was used to infuse tobacco smoke into a patient’s rectum for various medical purposes, primarily the resuscitation of drowning victims. A rectal tube inserted into the anus was connected to a fumigator and bellows that forced the smoke towards the rectum. The warmth of the smoke was thought to promote respiration, but doubts about the credibility of tobacco enemas led to the popular phrase “blow smoke up one’s ass.”

Those alien-like blob creatures growing in the sewers of Raleigh, NC that I posted about yesterday, they are in fact real. Scary, right?

DeepSeaNews.com sent the video to Dr. Timothy S. Wood, an expert on freshwater bryozoa and an officer with the International Bryozoology Association and he had this to say about it:

“Thanks for the video – I had not see it before. No, these are not bryozoans! They are clumps of annelid worms, almost certainly tubificids (Naididae, probably genus Tubifex). Normally these occur in soil and sediment, especially at the bottom and edges of polluted streams. In the photo they have apparently entered a pipeline somehow, and in the absence of soil they are coiling around each other. The contractions you see are the result of a single worm contracting and then stimulating all the others to do the same almost simultaneously, so it looks like a single big muscle contracting. Interesting video.”

The blobs are real, and sadly they are not of alien origin. They are however one of the most repulsive things I’ve ever seen outside of a Sci-fi movie. Good thing someone else discovered these, because my first reaction would be to kill them before they could destroy humanity as we know it. The fact these things are real and inhabiting the Raleigh, NC sewer system makes them even more disgusting. Time to filter that tap water people.

From what I’ve been reading no one has yet to figure out what these disgusting blob-like creatures are. They are apparently covering the walls of the sewers underneath the Cameron Village shopping center in Raleigh. This could easily be a viral marketing hoax but they look very convincing. Supposedly they might be a form of bryozoans. Either way, they are gross and let’s hope they don’t hatch and kill us all.
